Applications are open for this position until May 6th.
The Video Consortium is seeking a full-time Director to lead its new Local Video Journalism Program, which will expand upon the organization’s ongoing support and development of its robust network of documentary journalists. This is an extraordinary opportunity for someone with a background in video journalism — who has robust team building skills, deep local newsroom experience, a strong track record in innovation/building new initiatives from the ground up, and a desire to drive positive change in today’s media landscape. This role will, with the support of VC’s core team and collaboration of its incredible network of community organizers, work to harness the medium of video as an essential instrument for deeply reaching and informing audiences.
The ideal candidate will have ample past experience working in video production within a local newsroom(s) and/or at a multimedia desk, as both a journalist and as a hiring/team manager, and also understands what it takes to produce a powerful, character-driven story that, when published, makes a splash. They will be familiar with the inner workings and dynamics of a newsroom — of photo and video-focused journalists working with writers, of juggling outside/freelance work, of the process that a piece must go through before publishing, and of the different stakeholders and personalities involved in bringing stories to life, no matter the medium. They also will understand the difficulties of being a newsroom manager and leader, be it stretching budgets or aligning with strategic goals set by management. Essentially, they will also be passionate about using video in innovative and novel ways and on diverse platforms.
This role will also be working outside of newsrooms to build community-driven infrastructure that strengthens journalism and nonfiction storytelling ecosystems across the United States. Experience organizing communities of professionals and bringing people together towards a shared vision will also be essential for this role.
Importantly, this person will understand the state of the journalism landscape across the United States, and feel passionate about transforming and strengthening it to drive positive change in local and, in turn, global communities alike. Join our passionate team of changemakers!
